your thyroid and your fertility

Updated: Jan 4

Many women don't realise how important the thyroid is for becoming pregnant, but it can have a huge impact on your ability to conceive.

This butterfly shaped gland located at your throat governs your metabolism which means everything to do with your energy. If your energy isn't being produced or used correctly then the chances of becoming pregnant are going to be reduced.

Most of the women I speak with have an underfunctioning thyroid and therefore a slow metabolism. The three key symptoms to look out for are:

  • intolerance to cold

  • feeling tired and lethargic all the time

  • weight gain for no discernible reason

Other symptoms such as constipation, dryness of skin, falling of hair, depression, brain fog and frequent heavy periods can also be present.

But it can also go the other way. Having an over functioning thyroid means that all your energy is being produced fast but also being burnt up fast. The typical experience of someone with an overactive thyroid is 'tired but wired'. Symptoms can include:

  • feeling hot all the time

  • restlessness

  • weight loss

  • heart palpitations

  • anxiety

  • light or missing periods

From an emotional perspective, the thyroid is located at the throat chakra. This is the seat of communication and expression. When we are strong and resilient, we are able to express ourselves freely and be heard. When there is a disturbance, we are stifled and suffer in silence. This theme is very common among clients who have thyroid problems and is a beautiful example of how we are so interconnected on every plane of existence.

Thyroid issues are commonly attributed to women but it is becoming more common in males, especially the son's of women who were on the birth control pill. Our hormonal cycle works exactly as that - a cycle - so adding in synthetic hormones can cause disruption everywhere.

We inherit tendencies and susceptibilities from previous generations. I had a newborn client recently that can perfectly illustrate how thyroid issues can be passed down. This boy had a beautiful, gentle, drug free birth (obviously with homeopathy as part of the mix!). The pregnancy was great with no issues. When the baby arrived earthside, he had undescended testicles. Research has found that the thyroid plays an important part in testicular development - of course right? It's part of the hormone cycle! With baby having no other symptoms, the only place to look was his family history and guess what? Thyroid issues were everywhere!

Your thyroid can impact your ability to become pregnant if you have inherited tendencies, have disruptions to your hormonal cycle and if you lack the energy to to conceive and grow your baby. The good news is that homeopathy can very successfully treat thyroid issues without having to further disrupt your cycle with synthetic hormones.

If you have, or suspect you have a thyroid issue that is impacting your quality of life and/or your ability fall pregnant, then homeopathy is the one.
